Toxic Week

This is a portion of a patient’s mandible. Just to orient ourselves, the top part is the base of the tongue, the bottom is the chin. Grossly, this looks like squamous cell carcinoma. The mass has invaded the tongue, has creeped over the alveolar ridge (the part that holds the teeth), and ended in front of the mandible. I honestly want to see how this patient looks post-op. This is just one of two floor of mouth carcinomas I received last week. The other case was much worse, too bad I wasn’t able to take a photograph. The mandible has been converted into a mass and the teeth were found embedded in the mass.

This is a resected mass from the rectum and anus. Umm yeah, my finger is probing the anus. The mass seems to originate externally, the rectal mucosa is free from tumor. Masses from the anal opening are of squamous origin, those that arise more proximal to the dentate line are adenocarcinomas.

Last week was really toxic. These are just 2 of 9 radically resected specimens I received. I hope this week would be better.
